The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) located in Morong, Bataan is the first and only nuclear power plant in the Philippines. Constructed in 1984 and equipped with a Westinghouse light water reactor, the BNPP is designed to generate 621 megawatts of electricity. Due to numerous controversies, safety concerns about nuclear power, and allegations of political corruption, the BNPP never operated commercially and remains idle to this day. It was estimated to cost the Philippines US$500 million to construct the BNPP however its total cost ended up ballooning to over US$1.9 billion.
